Glossary — R

Ram (or buck) A male sheep of any age. Rangeland A large open land area on which livestock wander and graze. The native vegetation is mainly grasses, forbs, and shrubs. Relative Humidity Relative Humidity is the ratio between the amount of water vapour present in the air and the amount of water vapour required for saturation. rBST Recombinant BST, produced by genetically modified bacteria. Increases milk yield of dairy cows when administered properly.

Riparian Pertaining to the area along the banks of a river, stream, or lake.

Rotation (or crop rotation)

The growing of different crops, in recurring succession, on the same land.

Row crops

The rows or planting beds are far enough apart to permit the operation of machinery between them for cultural operations. Rabi Season Season during which winter crops like wheat, barley, mustard, gram, linseed, etc. are cultivated and usually it extends from October to April. Rainfed Farming Growing of field crops in areas where crop growth is dependent entirely on the rains is called rainfed farming.

Relay Cropping Seeding/planting of succeeding crop after flowering and before the harvest of the standing crop, it is analogue to a relay race where on crop hands over the baton (land to the next crop in quick succession, e.g., sowing in standing crop of maize). Retting Soaking flax, hemp, jute or other fibrous plant material in water to facilitate separating the fibres from the stalk for further processing.

Rhizome

The horizontal, slender, underground root-like stem capable or sending out roots and leafy shoots.
