The various irrigation sources may be classified into river, tank and well irrigation systems.
Large perennial rivers have facilitated the development of river irrigation extensively in many states, particularly in UP, AP, Punjab, Haryana, MP, and Rajasthan. Well irrigation is predominant in UP, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharastra and Madhya Pradesh. Copious supply of water from underground springs, within manageable depths, facilitates the development of lift irrigation.
